Technology in Fashion Education: CLO3D and Digital Design

Fashion schools now teach digital pattern cutting and 3D garment simulation alongside traditional scissors and calico because employers expect both. The design process now runs partly in software before anything is cut. BLS describes the traditional sequence as sketch, prototype in cheap material, fit on a model, adjust, then produce samples in the real fabric. What Is CLO3D?

CLO3D is software that builds a garment from flat patterns and drapes it on a virtual body, simulating how a specific fabric hangs, folds, and pulls. It’s made by CLO Virtual Fashion, founded in 2009, which also produces Marvelous Designer for game and animation studios and CLO-SET for sharing digital garments across teams.

The workflow is the same as physical construction. A designer draws or imports a 2D pattern, assembles the pieces on an avatar, assigns a fabric with its own weight and stretch behavior, then adjusts the pattern and watches the fit change in real time. Colorways, prints, trims, and hardware are applied to the same file, and the finished pattern can be exported and printed for cutting.

The output is a pattern file that a factory can use, plus a rendered image suitable for a fit review or an e-commerce listing. The garment exists as production data and as a visual at the same time.

Why Should Fashion Students Learn 3D Design?

Learning 3D design changes what a student can show an employer and how quickly they can work. Five practical reasons stand out:

  • Iteration costs almost nothing. Changing a seam, fabric weight, or colorway takes minutes rather than requiring a new toile. BLS makes the same point about CAD in general: designers can try different colors, designs, and shapes, and adjust them more easily than when working with real fabric on real people.
  • Fewer physical samples. Digital fit reviews reduce the rounds a garment goes through before it’s cut. But nothing removes the physical phase – BLS still describes designers producing samples in the actual materials used in manufacturing.
  • The portfolio looks different. Rendered garments, animated presentations, and virtual showrooms are things a sketchbook can’t do. BLS notes that employers rely on portfolios to judge talent when making hiring decisions.
  • It’s a shared language with factories. Pattern files, bills of materials, and colorways are shared among the designer, patternmaker, and manufacturer in a single file from anywhere. How CLO3D Is Used in the Fashion Industry

In industry, the software is in the middle of product development. A digital garment moves through the same approval chain as a physical sample and touches several teams along the way:

  • Design development. Silhouettes, seam lines, and fabric behavior are tested and revised before a pattern goes to a sample room.
  • Product development and technical design. The pattern file includes construction details, bills of materials, and colorways – the information a factory needs that a sketch can’t provide.
  • Merchandising and buying. Rendered garments allow a range to be reviewed and edited before physical production commitments are made, and the same renders can be carried over to e-commerce listings.
  • Collaboration. Cloud platforms let designers, patternmakers, technical designers, and suppliers open the same file from anywhere with an internet connection, which is especially important for international teams.

Digital skills change which roles a graduate can access more than they change the size of the industry. BLS projects 2% employment growth for fashion designers between 2024 and 2034, slower than the average across all occupations, with about 2,300 openings per year, most of which will replace people who leave the field. A tight market rewards a candidate who can do something the person beside them can’t.

What that looks like depends on the job. In design and product development, the pattern file is what you hand over, so knowing the software isn’t optional. How to Choose a Fashion School for Digital Design

Ask what software is taught, in which courses, and on what hardware. A fashion design school that lists digital design as a feature but teaches it in a single elective isn’t the same as one that integrates it into the curriculum. Five things worth checking before you apply:

  • Named software + named courses. Ask which titles are licensed and which modules use them. Vague answers usually mean an optional workshop.
  • Hardware that can run it. 3D simulation is demanding, and lab machines are often old. Ask for current specifications.
  • Digital pattern cutting in the curriculum. BLS notes that fashion programs teach students about textiles and fabrics as well as CAD technology, so a course that teaches rendering without patternmaking is teaching how to present, not actually produce.
  • Physical studios still in use. Employers expect graduates who can do both. BLS still describes designers producing samples in the actual materials used in manufacturing, so a school that has dropped sample-making has removed what the software models.
  • Portfolio output. Ask what students actually finish with. It may include rendered garments, animated presentations, and exportable pattern files. Employers rely on portfolios to gauge talent and creativity when making hiring decisions.
