Teaching Methods

Interior design is a discipline that requires both imagination and precision. At Istituto Marangoni Miami, students learn through a combination of academic instruction, studio-based projects, workshops, research, presentations, and practical design exercises.

Rather than limiting learning to theoretical concepts, the program encourages students to apply design principles to realistic projects. Students research users and environments, analyze spatial requirements, develop concepts, explore materials, create drawings and digital visualizations, and present their ideas.

Faculty members guide students throughout this process, helping them refine their concepts, strengthen their technical skills, and develop an individual design language.

The learning environment encourages students to:

  • Research and analyze design problems
  • Develop concepts based on user and spatial requirements
  • Create functional and aesthetically considered layouts
  • Explore materials, textures, colors, furniture, and lighting
  • Produce technical drawings and digital representations
  • Present and defend design concepts
  • Collaborate with other creative professionals
  • Respond constructively to professional feedback

This combination of creative exploration and technical development helps students build the confidence to approach increasingly complex interior design projects.

Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design is structured to provide students with a broad and progressively advanced understanding of interior design.

By the end of the program, students are expected to understand how design decisions affect functionality, aesthetics, accessibility, sustainability, user experience, and the overall character of an interior environment.

Students develop knowledge and practical skills in areas including:

  • Spatial planning and programming
  • Architectural drafting
  • Interior architecture principles
  • Furniture and product selection
  • Materials and finishes
  • Lighting design
  • Digital graphics
  • 2D and 3D visualization
  • Technical documentation
  • Building Information Modeling (BIM)
  • AutoCAD and other professional design technologies
  • Design history and visual culture
  • Sustainability and responsible design
  • Professional presentation and communication

Students also explore the historical, cultural, social, and economic influences that shape interior environments. Understanding these broader contexts allows designers to create spaces that are not only visually compelling but also relevant to the people and communities who use them.

From Concept to Completion

A strong interior designer must be able to move between creative thinking and technical execution.

Throughout the program, students practice developing a project from research and concept development through spatial planning, material selection, visualization, documentation, and final presentation.

The capstone experience allows students to bring together the knowledge and skills developed throughout their studies and demonstrate their ability to develop a comprehensive interior design project.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design combines creative development with technical, historical, cultural, and professional knowledge.

Students progressively explore the elements required to conceptualize and communicate interior environments, including spatial planning, drawing, architectural drafting, digital graphics, materials, furniture, lighting, and design visualization.

The curriculum also incorporates critical thinking, ethical considerations, sustainability, and the relationship between people and their environments.

Through studio courses and complementary academic subjects, students learn to approach interior design projects from multiple perspectives. They investigate the historical and cultural context of design while developing contemporary solutions for residential, commercial, hospitality, retail, and other environments.

This multidisciplinary approach helps students understand that successful interior design is not simply about creating beautiful spaces. It involves research, functionality, technical accuracy, communication, material knowledge, human experience, and responsible decision-making.

Students can apply these skills through increasingly complex projects as they progress through the program, culminating in a final project that demonstrates their development as emerging design professionals.

YOUR ACADEMIC JOURNEY

Istituto Marangoni Miami brings the school’s Italian design heritage into an international American context.
Students benefit from an educational philosophy shaped by Italian fashion and design culture while studying in one of the most internationally connected cities in the United States.

Miami adds another dimension to the experience. Its multicultural population, luxury sector, hospitality industry, art scene, architecture, and growing design community create a stimulating environment for aspiring designers.

The result is an education that encourages students to develop a global perspective rather than limiting their understanding of design to a single market or aesthetic tradition.

Students interested in other creative disciplines can also explore opportunities within Istituto Marangoni Miami, from a fashion design school environment to postgraduate study. Those considering further education may explore fashion graduate programs, a master degree in fashion design, or a master of fine arts in interior design after completing their undergraduate studies.
