A Cut Above: Hive & Colony and Istituto Marangoni Miami Students Find Their Signature Note
In music, one distinctive note can make a composition instantly recognizable. Hive & Colony believes an accessory can do the same for a look. On December 2, six Istituto Marangoni Miami finalists present the accessories they created for the menswear house’s second annual competition with IMM.

Why this collaboration. Hive & Colony partners with fashion and art schools to open its world to emerging designers. After last year’s challenge to upcycle Hive & Colony suits, this year’s brief turns to accessories, giving students a platform for their own point of view, insight from professionals shaping contemporary tailoring and visibility with industry and public audiences.
The brief. Under the theme Signature Note, each student chooses one accessory category and designs an original piece that completes a look without overpowering it. The piece should feel made for one particular wearer, using form, material, function and detail to express character while staying elegant and wearable. Entries include sketches, a mood board and a 500-word rationale. Weekly studio sessions support students along the way, and Hive & Colony’s social media team is following participants with on-campus interviews.
Who is involved. The competition is open to all IMM students. IMM-appointed and Hive & Colony judges, Amy, Mario and the Hive and Colony Team, will choose five finalists from all entries. All six will turn their concepts into finished accessories for the final event.
The award. The judges will name the overall winner at the finale. The award is being shaped with IMM around the winner’s strengths and may include bespoke credit, professional experience or other support to move the student’s work forward. The competition also opens internship opportunities with Hive & Colony. The winner will receive an Internship in Aventura Mall.
