CRAFTING TOMORROW'S FASHION

Fashion design brings together creativity, technical knowledge, materials, craftsmanship, and an understanding of how fashion is created and presented. From the first sketch to the finished garment, designers make decisions about silhouette, proportion, fabric, construction, color, and detail to develop a distinctive visual language.

The Fashion Design Program at Istituto Marangoni Miami provides an intensive introduction to the creative and technical processes behind contemporary fashion design. Structured across four levels, the program covers fashion illustration, pattern cutting, garment construction, textile exploration, collection development, digital design, and portfolio creation.

Students learn through a combination of design research, studio practice, technical development, and project-based assignments. The curriculum encourages students to develop their own design perspective while understanding the practical stages involved in transforming an initial concept into a finished fashion collection.

Set in Miami’s Design District, the program places fashion education within a dynamic environment connected to luxury, retail, art, design, and contemporary culture. Students can develop their creative skills while gaining a clearer understanding of the professional expectations of the fashion industry.

The Miami School of Fashion & Design

WHY CHOOSE THE FASHION DESIGN PROGRAM AT ISTITUTO MARANGONI MIAMI?

A strong fashion designer needs more than creative ideas. Understanding how to research a concept, select appropriate materials, develop patterns, construct garments, use digital tools, and communicate a collection is essential to the design process.

The Fashion Design Program combines these creative and technical areas into a focused learning experience.

Students can develop practical skills in:

  • Fashion illustration and design sketching
  • Design research and visual development
  • Pattern cutting
  • Garment construction
  • Sewing techniques
  • Textile exploration and fabric manipulation
  • Collection development
  • Color, silhouette, and proportion
  • Digital fashion design
  • CAD software
  • Sustainable design practices
  • Fashion industry processes
  • Creative presentation
  • Portfolio development
  • Professional design communication

The program is divided into four levels, allowing students to progress from fundamental fashion design concepts toward more developed technical and creative projects. Studio assignments encourage students to test ideas, solve design problems, refine construction techniques, and develop a cohesive body of work.

Students interested in other creative disciplines can also explore Istituto Marangoni Miami’s vocational programs, including the interior design program and fashion styling program. Those looking to continue their fashion education can also explore the school’s broader opportunities as a fashion design school.

Teaching Methods

The Fashion Design Program combines theoretical foundations with hands-on studio practice. Students learn through lectures, demonstrations, workshops, design projects, research, technical exercises, and individual development under faculty guidance.

The design process begins with research and concept development. Students investigate fashion references, cultural influences, trends, materials, silhouettes, and visual themes before translating their research into sketches, mood boards, and design concepts.

As projects progress, students develop their ideas through pattern cutting, fabric selection, textile manipulation, sewing, and garment construction. This practical approach helps students understand how an idea on paper becomes a wearable garment and how technical decisions can influence the final design.

Digital design is integrated into the learning experience alongside traditional techniques. Students work with industry-standard software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Clo3D to develop presentations, technical materials, digital concepts, and portfolio content.

Throughout the program, students receive feedback from faculty and refine their work through an iterative design process. This encourages experimentation while helping students build the discipline, precision, and problem-solving skills required in fashion design.

Learning Outcomes

By completing the Fashion Design Program, students develop a foundation in the creative, technical, and professional skills used throughout the fashion design process.

Students can develop the ability to:

  • Research fashion concepts, designers, movements, and cultural references
  • Create fashion illustrations and design sketches
  • Develop silhouettes, proportions, and color stories
  • Research and select fabrics and textiles
  • Experiment with textile manipulation techniques
  • Develop patterns and apply pattern-cutting principles
  • Construct garments using appropriate sewing techniques
  • Translate concepts into finished fashion pieces
  • Develop original fashion collections
  • Use digital design and CAD tools
  • Prepare professional fashion presentations
  • Apply sustainable design principles
  • Analyze fashion industry processes and production
  • Build and refine a professional portfolio
  • Present design concepts and explain creative decisions

The program also introduces students to the broader fashion system, including manufacturing, supply chains, production planning, scheduling, and the relationship between design and commercial considerations.

Through progressive projects, students learn how individual garments can become part of a cohesive collection. They develop an understanding of how research, materials, construction, styling, and presentation work together to communicate a clear design concept.

Industry Engagement

Fashion design education becomes more relevant when students can connect creative development with the realities of the industry. The program introduces students to professional perspectives and opportunities to understand how fashion businesses operate beyond the design studio.

Istituto Marangoni Miami has more than 80 business relationships with luxury houses and businesses in the Miami Design District and beyond. Industry-oriented activities can give students exposure to professionals, brands, creative projects, and different areas of the fashion ecosystem.

Students may engage with:

  • Brand partnerships
  • Industry professionals
  • Business case studies
  • Fashion design projects
  • Creative competitions
  • Runway and fashion events
  • Industry presentations
  • Professional networking
  • Career development activities

These experiences can help students understand how designers work within different professional environments and how creative decisions relate to brand identity, target markets, production requirements, and current fashion trends.

The school’s Career Services team also supports students with professional preparation, including résumé development, mock interviews, and job application guidance.

Facilities and Resources

Istituto Marangoni Miami’s seven-story campus is located in the Miami Design District, providing students with dedicated spaces for fashion and design education.

The campus includes theory classrooms, an atelier for practical design work, a professional photoshoot studio, computer laboratories, and physical and virtual library resources.

The atelier provides a dedicated environment for fashion design development, allowing students to work on practical exercises, pattern cutting, garment construction, and textile projects.
Computer laboratories are equipped with industry-standard creative software, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Clo3D. These tools support digital fashion design, technical development, visual presentations, and portfolio creation.

Students can also access the school’s physical and virtual library for fashion references, research materials, publications, and resources that support academic and creative projects.
